Climb Kilimanjaro

Marangu Route (5-6 Days)

Marangu Route (5-6 Days)

Overview

The Marangu Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the south-east. Known affectionately as the 'Coca-Cola Route' because bottled soft drinks were historically sold at the huts, it is unique in offering permanent wooden A-frame huts (Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo) instead of camping tents. It follows the same ascending and descending trail through lush forest and moorland. We strongly recommend the 6-day itinerary, which incorporates an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut to Zebra Rocks.

Tour Schedule

Day 1 — Marangu Gate (1,870m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Register at the park headquarters and hike through dense rainforest canopy. Side visit to Maundi Crater before settling into Mandara Hut.

Day 2 — Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Emerge into open moorland where giant lobelias and heather dominate. Enjoy panoramic views of Mawenzi peak and the plains of Moshi below.

Day 3 — Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (Day Hike to Zebra Rocks, 4,020m)

Essential acclimatization day: leisurely hike to the black-and-white striped volcanic Zebra Rocks, resting and hydrating for the summit push.

Day 4 — Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Cross the windswept, barren alpine saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Reach the stone-built Kibo Hut for early dinner and rest before summit night.

Day 5 — Summit Push: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) & Descend to Horombo

Midnight departure up steep volcanic scree to Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. Continue along the crater crest to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. Descend back to Horombo Hut.

Day 6 — Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,870m) & Transfer to Moshi

Retrace your steps through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your gold summit certificate and return to Moshi for celebration.

FAQ

Why choose 6 days over 5 days?

The 5-day Marangu route has a low summit rate because it skips the acclimatization day. Adding day 3 at Horombo Hut dramatically boosts your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak safely.
