Overview
Approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from the south-west, the Machame Route ascends through lush montane rainforest, expansive moorland, alpine desert, and the glaciated summit realm. Nicknamed the 'Whiskey Route' for its rugged nature, Machame offers superior acclimatization thanks to the classic 'climb high, sleep low' profile between Lava Tower (4,630m) and Barranco Camp (3,960m). Guided by Dyna Kilimanjaro Safari's certified wilderness guides with twice-daily pulse-oximeter monitoring and emergency oxygen.
Tour Schedule
After registration at Machame Gate, begin trekking through the dense, atmospheric montane rainforest. Watch for blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus before arriving at Machame Camp for a hot dinner.
Leave the forest behind and ascend across the heath and moorland zones. Traverse exposed rocky ridges and open moorland slopes onto the vast Shira Plateau, with clear views of Kibo's glaciers.
Crucial acclimatization day: climb eastward across semi-desert terrain to the volcanic landmark of Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend into the dramatic Barranco Valley surrounded by giant groundsel trees.
Tackle the famous Barranco Wall — an exhilarating, non-technical scramble offering sweeping views of the southern ice fields. Continue across alpine ridges to Karanga Camp.
Climb through the barren alpine desert to Barafu Camp on an exposed rocky ridge. Rest early, hydrate, and prepare cold-weather gear for the midnight summit push.
Begin at midnight under the stars, climbing steep switchbacks past Stella Point (5,756m) to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Celebrate at Africa's highest point before descending to Mweka Camp.
Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your official summit certificates from TANAPA, bid farewell to your mountain crew, and transfer back to your Moshi hotel for celebratory hot showers.

FAQ
Should I choose 6 or 7 days on Machame?
We strongly recommend the 7-day option. The extra night at Karanga Camp splits the climb before Barafu, giving your body crucial rest and increasing your summit success rate past 90%.
Is climbing the Barranco Wall technical?
No mountaineering or technical climbing experience is needed. It requires hand-and-foot scrambling over rocks, and our guides assist you closely at every step.
